EMBROIDERY

Natural dyes are colouring sources extracted from plants, invertebrates and minerals. They can be classified based
on source, hue, chemical structure and colour component.

Dyeing with natural materials requires an
endless amount of time and patience. It takes days to collect, grind, soak and
pre-cook in order to extract the dye. For each dye material a different
extraction method can be applied. It is up to the dyer to choose the most
suitable method for the dyeing of the textiles. Parameters such as fibre,
temperature, time, pH, mordent and dye molecular characteristics can determine
the results, lightfastness and durability of the dye colour.

The use of natural dyes has become a quest of
re-discovering all the hidden colours within nature and reclaim cooperative
relationships with the Earth.

In Xochistlahuaca (Mexico), Cochenille (Dactylopius
coccus), Nance (Byrsonima crassifolia), Almond
(Prunus) and Hay were often used as natural dye sources for the Amuzgo women. Sadly,
this practise has been lost among artisans, despite the availability of these natural resources.

TUYO is building partnerships with artisans to
recover the local dyeing practices while developing accountable production
processes with viable sustainable methods.

NATURAL DYES

Gossypium hirsutum also known as Mexican cotton is the most
planted species of cotton in the world. Cultivated primarily for its white
vegetable seed fiber, this type of cotton exhibits various shades of green and
brown. It’s intermediate linters length simplifies the harvesting, the spinning
and weaving processes. At first, the fiber is white and, in approximately one
week, it assumes the color according to its genotypic constitution. The shades
of the colored cotton may vary according to the seasons, climate, location and
soil variations.

In the region of Guerrero in Mexico, Amuzgo
women plant these cotton seeds during the months of July and August, so it can
be harvested in January of the coming year. After the harvesting, the cotton
needs to be manually cleaned by removing the seeds and pieces of bark/plants
that might be embedded in the plant fibers. It is crucial to soften and reduce
the density to make the cotton more manageable. “Varear” is an ancestral
technique that consists of hitting vigorously and consistently the cotton with
4 long smooth sticks. For this the fibers must be spread on a woven palm mat that
lies on top of a mound of dried banana leaves (tied into a rectangular shape).
When the desired texture is achieved, the artisan starts spinning the cotton by
hand with the help of the “malacate”. It takes a lot of practice and patience
to be able to spin very thin yarn.

	Weaving

EMBROIDERY
NATURAL DYES
COTTON

Weaving is a textile production technique where two different sets of yarns interlaced horizontally and
vertically. The vertical threads are nominated the warp and the horizontal
ones the weft. The warp is the backbone of the weave that holds the tension
needed during the process, while the weft creates the patterns and designs.

The most common device used for interlacing the
threads is a loom. There are several types of looms and each culture developed
their own weaving methods and tools. Most woven products are created with basic
weaves such as plain weave and satin weave/twill. The weaves may vary according
to the warp and weft densities, counts, yarn thickness/structure, width/ length
and the set up of a loom. In certain cultures, to weave has become a symbol
of cosmic creation and the structure upon which
individual destiny is created.

Amuzgo women start from the early age of seven
to weave on a backstrap loom. The backstrap loom consists of a series of wooden
rods and beams that support the threads that are tied up from an upper end to a
tree/wall and on a lower end to the weaver’s waist. Heddle rods are used to lift the even threads
(warp) to create a gap for the horizontal threads (weft) to be inserted. With the
help of a wooden “machete” the weft is beaten and tightened together. By
repetitively repeating these steps, this women weave garments such as huipils
(traditional loose-fitting tunic), rebozos (traditional scarf/shawl) and
household items such as napkins and table runners. It can take weeks up to a
year to weave just one garment and take even longer to assemble and finish the
fabric with complicated decorative hand stitching, embroidery and braiding techniques.
All woven pieces are unique and not alike.
These women practise three main weaving techniques:

- The
brocade: a supplementary weft technique, where extra threads are manually added
to the standard weaving process and gives the fabric the appearance that it has
been embroidered.

- The
gauze: a loose open weave structure made by twisting adjacent
warps together, giving the fabric a thin, open, and transparent look.

- The
“concha de armadillo”: a sort of brocade gauze, where the woven gauze is
filled with supplementary weft threads.

Weaving in this region is considered a women’s labour
to do along with farming and household chores. It reflects the ideology and
identity of their culture and unites them as a linguistic group for future
generations. There has been an admirable effort from the older generations to
preserve these techniques and symbolic representations while teaching and
encouraging the younger generations to pursue these practises. Unfortunately,
most of the textiles made are still for family use and this craft can’t compete
with the machine-made cloth and the high demand for
cheap labour.

TUYO establishes design programs that forge an
ethnic identity and resist cultural standardization by motivating the weavers
to restore symbols and create the ones that represent their times.

EMBROIDERY

NATURAL DYES
COTTON
WEAVING

Embroidery is a decorating craft that uses a
thread and needle to adorn and embellish fabric. The needle comes in various
sizes and types and the fabrics and yarns used vary from place to place.

For the Amuzgo women, all knowledge is shared
and transmitted from mother to daughter. To acquire weaving and embroidery skills,
it is crucial to develop daily practice and memorize symbology. There is no
authorship in the designs, every single aspect of the practice is shared within
the community and becomes part of their culture.

Chueyno, means the canvas or cloth that covers
the body of a woman and carries the expression of past, present and future. Intuitively without patterns, the embroideries
inherently on this canvas express the emotions and embodied aspects of the
personalities, lives and experiences of these women.

In Xochistlahuaca (Mexico) embroidery is traditionally used on the chest of a “huipil”, on the edges of the neck, sleeves and on its seams. Besides the embroidery on this traditional garment, this technique is only used when making tortilla napkins. There are four types of embroidery: - “Randa de 3 puntadas” - “Randa de diente de iguana”- “Randa de 5 puntadas”- “Randa de gusano”

Embroidery traditional practises are now in danger due to the introduction of commercial fabrics and the lack of market to sell their products. Machine stiching and ribbons are being used to replace “randa”.

TUYO promotes and optimizes the value of the textile works of this community and encourages future generations to pursuit these practises. Creates a bridge for knowledge exchange and renews the connection between generations. Becomes a platform for women to regain their independence.
